Creating the Conditions to Thrive
Investing in Inclusive Environments
Inclusion is not only about people; it is also about places. Berewood Primary’s transformation of an unused storeroom into a beautifully curated sensory room shows what is possible when a vision is supported by Trust‑wide resource and expertise.

With above national numbers of pupils requiring additional support, Berewood identified the need for a dedicated environment where pupils could regulate, explore and feel safe. Through SEN funding and the Trust’s strategic support, the academy was able to develop a space that includes:
• adaptive lighting and reflective surfaces
• tactile exploration panels and fibre optic strands
• padded areas to support safety and comfort
• a flexible layout to enable both individual and small group use
This work reflects two important aspects of our Trust approach. First, it is research informed for impact, with the space shaped by evidence around sensory regulation, cognitive load and wellbeing. Second, it reflects a long-term view, with high-quality equipment and thoughtful design ensuring the space will continue to support pupils for years to come.
The sensory room is more than a physical space. It represents a wider commitment to inclusion across our Trust. It shows that inclusion is not an add-on, but something we prioritise through deliberate planning, investment and care.
