A new Headteacher reflects on joining our Trust

When Grace Brown joined the University of Chichester Academy Trust as Headteacher of Flying Bull Academy, she brought with her many years of experience working in a local authority school. Stepping into headship is always a significant moment in a leader’s career, but Grace says the support she has experienced since joining the Trust has made the transition both positive and reassuring.

Reflecting on her first few weeks, Grace describes the level of collaboration and support across the Trust as one of the things that has stood out most.

"Whenever I've needed support, it has been there," she explained when speaking with Trust leaders. "Whether it's a quick answer to a question, help with a challenge, or strategic advice, there are always people willing to help."

Grace says the support has come in many forms. Sometimes it has been informal check-ins from fellow headteachers across our Trust, offering encouragement or simply asking how things are going. At other times, it has involved more strategic support and guidance from colleagues with experience in leading academies.

"As a new headteacher, knowing there is always someone I can call or email makes the role feel far less lonely," she said. "That support is there not only from the central Trust team, but also from other headteachers who are incredibly generous with their time and expertise."

Having previously worked in a local authority school for many years, Grace has noticed a clear difference in the level of collaboration across the Trust.

The feeling of collaboration and support is really noticeable. Expertise, ideas and good practice are shared openly. There’s a real sense that we are working together for the benefit of all our children.

For Grace, this collaborative approach ultimately benefits pupils the most. Being part of a Trust enables academies to share resources, learn from each other and draw on collective expertise.

"Our pupils benefit from being part of a wider team," she explained. "The expertise, resourcing and support across the Trust all help to support children on their journey."

Grace also says the Trust’s core messages resonate strongly with her own vision for education.

The Trust values of Achieve More, Challenge Thinking and Shape Futures align completely with what I believe education should be about. There is a real determination to ensure our children have the opportunities and high expectations they deserve.

Looking ahead, Grace is excited about the future of Flying Bull Academy and the role the Trust will continue to play in supporting its development.

"This journey has been incredibly exciting," she said. "I truly believe this academy will continue to be something special. With the magic of our staff, the brilliance of our children, and the support of the Trust, we can continue to build something really special for our community."
